Mr. Winthy Hatcher, Jr., 80, of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest on Monday, March 4, 2024 at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, VA.


Mr. Hatcher, most often called “Wimp” “Wimpy” or “Junnie,” son of the late Deacon Winthy Hatcher, Sr. and Julia Harper Hatcher, was born on July 24, 1943 in Mecklenburg County, VA. He attended Chase City Grade School, West End High School and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.


Beginning in 1963, he was employed with the Town of Chase City under the leadership of Jack Pruett. During his tenure with the Town of Chase City, he worked hard, took courses, and earned his credentials to become head of the water treatment department until he retired to take care of his wife before she passed away in 2010. After a short period of time, Mr. Hatcher returned to work part-time to help the Sanitation department by driving the garbage truck, which he truly enjoyed and loved to do.


In 1978, he became the first African American member of the Chase City Volunteer Fire Department. Seventeen years later, he made history again becoming the first African American Fire Chief in Mecklenburg County and Southside Association.


In March of 2006, Mr. Hatcher was elected to the Town Council of Chase City where he served 12 years.


During his career, he was a Boys’ Scout Troop leader and even served as an Auxiliary member of the Police Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed and often cut lawns for many people in the community. He enjoyed riding and eating out, vacationing, playing golf and even took a chance at riding a motorcycle and skiing with some of his buddies.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Deloris Hatcher; a son, Stephen; and his siblings, Thomas, Melvin, Curtis, Preston, Irene and Corine.


Winthy leaves to cherish his memory his son, Harvey Hatcher (Kathy) of Oxford, NC; a devoted friend, Helen B. Hill of Chase City, VA; grandchildren: Adrianna, Brittany, Donte, Sean and Madisyn; eight great-grandchildren; siblings: Robert Hatcher (Elsie) of Chase City, VA, Earlene Hatcher Palmer (Lindell) of South Hill, VA, and Marvin Hatcher (Poochie) of Skipwith, VA; two sisters-in-law, Joyce (Noonie) Bacon (Roger) of Randallstown, MD and Brenda S. Hatcher of Chase City, VA; brother-in-law, Terry Harper (Linda) of Rock Island IL; daughter-in-law, Peggy Hatcher of Chase City, VA; two devoted nephews, Tymane Keene of Ellenwood, GA and Marques Fowlkes of Chase City, VA; god-son, Brian Keeton of Charlotte, NC; two special ladies, Keesya Hill-Jones(Shawn) of Toano, VA and Yvonne Hill Harris (William) of Charlotte, NC and a host of other loving nephews, nieces, relatives and caring friends throughout the community.


Funeral services for Mr. Winthy Hatcher, Jr. will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the Robert E. Lee Auditorium, Chase City, VA with Rev. Dr. Ricky A. Lee officiating. Burial will follow at Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chase City, VA. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday from 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
