Ralph A. Smith

Mr. Ralph A. Smith, Sr., 92, of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond, VA. Mr. Smith was born in Chase City, VA March 18, 1922 to the late Steven “Stevie” and Bertha Hepburn Smith.  He received his early education in the schools of Mecklenburg County and was a graduate of Hackensack High School in New Jersey.   After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, and later served on the Orange Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant.   He was a member of The Masonic Order of Alpha Lodge No. 116 in East Orange, NJ.  In 1985, Mr. Smith moved back to Chase City, where he joined Concord Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma L. Smith and one son, Ralph A. Smith, Jr. Cherishing his memories are four grandchildren, Shane Johnson of Neptune, NJ; Raymond Smith of Montclair, NJ, Tajuan Smith of East Orange, NJ and Ralph A. Smith, III of Newark, NJ; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Robert Slaughter of East Orange, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Sarah "Rose" Slaughter of East Orange, NJ and Tazzie Baskerville of Montclair, NJ; one granddaughter-in-law, Nicole Howard of Montclair, NJ and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. A funeral service for Mr. Ralph A. Smith will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.   Services 2:00 P.M.
