Mr. Otis Driggs Puryear, 78, of Hyattsville, MD and formerly of Skipwith, VA entered eternal rest Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at Doctors Community Hospital, Lanham, MD. Mr. Puryear was born in Skipwith, VA Nov. 7, 1930 to the late Willie and Matilda Pulliam Puryear. He was a graduate of historic Thyne Institute, Chase City, VA, and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired substance abuse counselor having been employed by St. Elizabeth Hospital. In addition to working at St. Elizabeth Hospital full time he also drove city cab for 35 years and was the owner of an office cleaning business. Mr. Puryear was a member of Kent Baptist Church, Landover, MD. In addition to his parents Mr. Puryear was preceded in death by his wife, Terry Lee Lyons Puryear, one child, and seven sisters and brothers. Cherishing his memories are seven children, Angela, Otis Jr. (Shirley), Anita, Consuella, Shirley, Antonio Sr., and Robert; two extended children Otis and Bart Jason; 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Dashiell of Baltimore, MD and Geraldine White of Clarksville, VA; one brother, Meredith Puryear (Helena) of Delaware; one sister-in-law, Pauline Nelson of Upper Marlboro, MD; four brothers-in-law, Ralph Lyons and William Lyons of Chase City, VA, Julius Lyons of Washington, D.C., James Lyons of Baltimore, MD and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mr. Otis Driggs Puryear will be conducted 12:00 Noon Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at Saint Luke Baptist Church, Skipwith, VA with Rev. H.F. Peace, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
