Mrs. Mildred Louise Long Smith, 86, of Brodnax, VA entered eternal rest on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA. Mrs. Smith was born in Chase City, VA June 5, 1932 to the late George, Jr. and Alberta Green Long. She was a graduate of the historic Thyne Institute, Chase City, VA, and furthered her education at the former Saint Paul’s College, Lawrenceville, VA. Mrs. Smith was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, South Hill, VA where she served as President of Episcopal Church Women, Financial Secretary, and Trinity Episcopal Vestry and Diocese of Southern Virginia. She was also a member of Saint Paul’s College Alumni Association. Mrs. Smith was a retired Educator for the Mecklenburg County School System, and was also previously employed by the Lake Country Learning Center, and the Virginia State Police. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Lenton C. Smith, Sr.; a daughter, Jackie C. Harris; two brothers, Hilton and Alvino Ray Long, and a sister, Verdell Dixon. Cherishing her memories are her children, Linda McGowan (Eric) of Reisterstown, MD, Gloria Smith of Lanham, MD; Lenton Smith, Jr. (Betty) of Lawrenceville, VA, Mildred “Polly” Waye (Larry) of Victoria, VA, Cherhyl Smith and Krista Smith both of South Hill, VA, William Smith of Brodnax, VA, Gerald Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Carlos Smith of Richmond, VA and Ava Smith of Silver Spring, MD; 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; one aunt, Christine Long of Chase City, VA, three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Louise Long Smith will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA with Rev. Dr. Terrence Walker, officiating and Rev. Linda Goode delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery, South Hill, VA. Public viewing will held on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
