Mildred Hargrove was born the fifth of thirteen children to the late Robert Lee Hargrove, Sr. and Mary Magdalene Mason Hargrove on March 16, 1943 in Boydton, Virginia. As a very young girl, she professed Christ as her Lord and Savior, was baptized, and joined the St. Taylor R.Z.U.A. Church. She received her formal education in the Mecklenburg County Public School System and graduated in the Class of 1961 from West End High School in Skipwith, Virginia. After graduating, Mildred remained in Boydton for one year to help her mom care for her newborn baby brother, Garfield. He would be the youngest of her siblings. In 1962, Mildred relocated to Bronx, New York where she lived with her Aunt Bell Moody and continued the Hargrove tradition that required you to live with a responsible adult family member, if you left home. That same year, she joined the New Mount Zion Baptist Church, in Harlem, under the leadership of the Late Rev. Edward L. Satchel. She worked faithfully at New Mount Zion while singing with Choir #2 and serving on the Pastor’s Aid Ministry. In 1998, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Carl Washington, Jr., she was ordained a Deaconess. Mildred was always gainfully employed. As a single mom, she would take on part time jobs in order to maintain a quality lifestyle for herself, daughter Joyce Marie, and grandson Cory. She was strong in her Christian beliefs. She had a strong love for God, family, and mankind. She also had a strong work ethic. She ensured that all of these attributes were passed down to her daughter. Mildred was known for her sharp dressing style, witty personality, and pleasant demeanor. It was evident that she was a people person and one who was not afraid of hard work. Mildred knew all the latest dance steps and was an avid lover of music. She was quite the entertainer and never lost her joy. Following many years of gainful employment, she retired in 2007. In 2008, Mildred relocated to Palm Bay, Florida and later to Cocoa, Florida with her sister Mable. These two sisters became inseparable. She exhibited so much admiration for Mable and Mable was very protective of her sister. They shared many happy moments of reminiscing about the good old days. Mildred transitioned on Sunday, January 21, 2018. Her parents, Robert Lee and Mary Magdalene Hargrove and nine (9) siblings (Dorothy Lee, Pauline Catoe, Mary Elizabeth Dunnell, Ellen Smith, Mable Wynn, James Hargrove, Garfield Hargrove, Edna Duncan and Ralph Carter) preceded her in death. She leaves to celebrate her memory, her daughter, Joyce Hargrove of Ocoee, Fl.; grandson Cory Hargrove of Newton, NJ; three (3) brothers, Robert Lee Jr. and Raymond Hargrove of East Orange, N.J., and Joseph Hargrove (Shelia) of Boydton, VA.; three (3) sisters, Margaret Crenshaw (Ronald) of Conyers, GA., Shirley Young (Steve) and Lucille Evans (James) both of Boydton, VA.; two (2) brothers–in-law, Frank Wynn of Cocoa, Florida and Carwell Duncan, Sr. of Boydton, VA.; one (1) sister-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, close friends Alvin and Renee Murray, and very close high school friends, Lucille Clarke Lee, Evelyn Fuller Jordan, and Amy Seay.
