Metta Laverne Harper

Ms. Metta Laverne Harper, 80, of Boydton, VA departed this life on June 20, 2024 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC.

Ms. Harper was born on May 15, 1944 in Chase City, VA to the late Margaret Lee Bowers Harper and Oliver Tee Harper, Sr. In her youth, she attended Bethlehem Baptist Church and graduated at the head of her class from West End High School in 1962. She relocated to Mount Kisco, NY where she worked in electronics with Curtis Instruments until she retired. She was a member of Antioch Church in Bedford Hills, NY where she served in varying capacities including Deaconess, Sunday School Superintendent, Missionary and Dean of the Central Hudson Baptist Association. When she returned to Boydton in 2006, she attended Bible Way Church where she ushered, taught Sunday School and did the church programs.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Oliver Tee Harper, Jr.; and sisters, Mary Lee Baldwin and Miriam Louise Hicks.

Left to cherish her memory are her brothers, Charles Ted Harper (Rose) and Reginald Lewis Harper; sisters, Margaret Delores Alexander, Linda Elizabeth Mangum (Curtis) and Cathy Harper Davis; her goddaughter, Michelle Laverne Hodge; her best friend, Betty Jordan, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Metta Laverne Harper will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 28, 2024 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA with Rev. Calvin Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chase City, VA. Public viewing will begin on Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M.
