Ms. Mary Sue Fowlkes Whitehead, 76, of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA. Ms. Whitehead was born in Lunenburg County, VA August 21, 1941 to the late Robert Edward and Lula Townsend Fowlkes. She was a 1958 graduate of Lunenburg High School, Victoria, VA; she also was a graduate of Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) in Petersburg, VA. She received a Master of Education Degree in Administration and Supervision. She had done further study at Virginia Commonwealth University, Longwood College, the University of Virginia and University of Arkansas. She retired from the Prince Edward County Public Schools in June 2004 after 36 years in education. Ms. Whitehead had been active in numerous professional and civic organizations; the Prince Edward Education Association, Virginia Education Association, National Education Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Phi Delta Kappa, Virginia State University Alumni Association and the Virginia Association of Vocational Administrators, and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ms. Whitehead was a member of New Rehoboth Baptist Church, Keysville, VA where she previously served as the Financial Secretary. Cherishing her memories are a daughter, Vera Tann (Ronnie) of Chesterfield, VA; a grandson, Kelvin Thomas Jr. of Jacksonville, NC; a great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Grace Thomas of Charlotte, NC; brother, Edward L. Fowlkes (Melba) of Chase City, VA; niece, Tracey Fowlkes of Chase City, VA; two great nephews, two great-great nephews; grand God-children, Dallas Dance and Dominique Moody; sisters-in-law, Verna Spencer, Naomi Whitehead and Janis Whitehead; brothers-in-law, Thomas Thompson and Richard Forest and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services will be conducted 12:00 Noon Monday, December 11, 2017 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA with Rev. John Craighead, officiating. Burial will follow in the New Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery, Keysville, VA. Public viewing for family and friends will be Sunday, from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 PM Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
