Mrs. Lessie Estelle Pettus, “Grandma Lye” , 82, of Chase City, Virginia passed away peacefully  Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at her residence.  Mrs. Pettus was born November 24, 1926 in Chase City, Virginia.  She was the fourth of eight children born to Nathan and Rosa Lee Pamplin. She attended Mecklenburg Public Schools and was a member Concord Baptist Church.  Lessie worked several years at Hampco Shirt Factory and only departed to take care of her ailing mother.  After the passing of her mother, Lessie returned to work as an Independent Domestic Worker for 29 years.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Rosa Lee Pamplin, by her husband, Samuel Pettus, by her son Freddie Pettus, by her four brothers Hura, Henry, James, and Marvin Pamplin, and by her three sisters Odie Burton, Vernice Pamplin, and Sadie Clark.  Cherishing her memory are four sons, Samuel (Geneva) Pettus, Woodrow (Shirley) Pettus, Glen (Yvonne) Pettus, and James (Darlene) Pettus;  six daughters, Mary (James) Moore, Yvonne (Jim) Brown, Betty Jean Love, Nancy Ann Credle, Doris Burton (Joe Blake), and Estelle Pettus;  twenty eight grandchildren, eighty one great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law Emma Yancey, Mary Alice Pamplin, and Inez Pamplin, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Lessie Estelle Pettus will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA with Elder Betty Pettus, officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until service time. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
