Laverne Young

Ms. LaVerne Young, 68, of Newark, NJ entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She was born on September 11, 1950, in Newark, NJ to Thelma W. Young and the late James Robert Young, Sr. She obtained her early education in Newark, NJ at the Eighteenth Ave School, Newton St. School, Bergen St. School, Peshine Ave School where she graduated from the 8th grade and went on to Weequahic High School, and graduated with the class of 1968. She was also business manager of the Sigma Psi Beta Sorority. After high school, she entered the workforce at the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of Newark, NJ, as a secretary. Her work was so well liked by the company that she was sent to a computer training class at the World Trade Center in New York as a redactor operator. Her skills extended to working for other companies as a secretary and a paralegal. She was also employed by the I Epstein and Sons Inc., a kosher food distributor for Manischewitz. With this company her skills were so advanced that she was promoted to executive secretary to the president of the company. She also attended the Culinary Arts School in Newark, NJ where she obtained a certificate and was hired by Bloomfield College in New Jersey, and worked there until she retired in 2011. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Robert Young, Jr. and John Anthony Young, and a sister Janet Michelle Young. She is survived by her son, William Daniel Hill, III of Newark, NJ; her mother, Thelma W. Young of Boydton, VA; two brothers, Stephen V. Young (Shirley) and Rev. Mark K. Young (Rev. Zella) all of Boydton, VA; one sister, Karen L. Young of Washington DC, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Ms. LaVerne Young will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the chapel of C. H. Harris Funeral Home, Buffalo Junction, VA with District Elder Kenyatta Evans delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Young Family Cemetery, Boydton, VA. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Arrangements are by C. H. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
