Mr. Joseph Earl Epps, 84, of Chase City entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at his residence.
Mr. Epps was born in Lunenburg County, VA on August 28, 1938 to the late George Edward Epps and Mary Estella Dodson-Epps. He graduated from Lunenberg High School in 1957 and received his B.A. in Architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY. His 45-year career spanned 41 states and 23 foreign countries. He served in organizations and projects throughout the local area including Chase City Chamber of Commerce, MacCallum More Gardens & Museum, Roanoke River Rails to Trails & Tobacco Heritage Trail, Thyne Institute Memorial, Occoneechee State Park, and The Peoples Community Center in Victoria.
Mr. Epps was proud of and honored his heritage Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe serving as member of the Tribal Council, and Powwow Committee Co-Chairman. Over the years, he has received numerous awards and been featured in articles in multiple publications (The Mecklenburg Sun, The News-Progress, Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Virginia Review).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son David, and four siblings: brothers, Lawrence and Billy, and sisters, Bea and Hattie Blanche.
He is survived by his children, Karen Epps (Bill Englehart) and Debbie Epps (James Robertson); granddaughter, Jamie Kay McCormick (Matt), great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Astrith, and Theresa Samson; sisters Gladys Pedesco and Shirley Tutt, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Joseph E. Epps will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City with Rev. Bill Englehart officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Victoria. Viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M.
