Guy Thomas Garrett Jr.

Guy Thomas Garrett, Jr., a resident of Buffalo Junction, VA for over twenty years, departed this life on Monday, February 7, 2011 in Cary, NC. Guy, or “Sonny” as he was known to close relatives, was born in Peekskill, NY on June 7, 1932.  He was the eldest of four sons born to the late Guy Thomas Garrett, Sr. and the late Annie Garrett Williams.  Guy graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1954 with a degree in Political Science.  In 1955, Guy married Geraldyne Baker and from that union, two children were born.  He served in the U.S. Army for three years as an infantry officer.  Following his military service, he returned to New York and held a series of positions of increasing responsibility in the Human Resources profession.  At the time of his retirement in 1988, he had served for over ten years as Vice President of Personnel of The New York Times Company.    Throughout his life, Guy used his God-given leadership skills in service to the Lord.  He was a faithful member of Wharton Memorial Baptist Church where he served for more than twenty years as a Deacon.  He was bestowed the honorable status of Deacon Emeritus in April 2007.  Guy is survived by two children, daughter Lynn Henderson Harris and son Guy, III both of Durham, NC; a daughter-in-law, Linda Burdine Garrett; a brother, William Garrett; four grandchildren, Kira Henderson of Macon, GA; Otis Henderson, Priscilla Garrett, and Shirley Garrett all of Durham; one great-grandchild, Michael Henderson of Macon, GA, and a host of other relatives and friends who cherish his memory.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Garrett and Arnold Garrett and a son-in-law, Lucious Harris. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Wharton Memorial Baptist Church, 57 White House Road, Nelson, VA.  The service will be preceded by a one hour visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary.  The family requests that friends and family consider making a donation in Guy’s honor to Alzheimers North Carolina, Inc. in lieu of sending flowers.  The mailing address for the organization is 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC  27609; phone numbers 919-832-3732 or 1-800-228-8738.  Should a gift of flowers be preferred, the family florist is Avenue Florist in Clarksville, VA; 434-738-8888.  Arrangements are by C.H.
