Mrs. Gloria D. Smith, 80, of Boydton, VA entered eternal rest on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at her home in Boydton, VA.


Mrs. Smith was born on June 28, 1944, in Chatham, VA to the late Oakley Davis, Sr. and Eva Stone Davis. She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age, and joined Rosebud Baptist Church in Chatham, VA, and later became a dedicated member of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Chase City, VA, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and doing missionary work. Mrs. Smith graduated from Northside High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA, and a master’s degree in education from Longwood College in Farmville, VA. She was an accomplished educator who loved teaching and inspiring her elementary school students in the Mecklenburg County School System. Afterwards, she served as the principal of Boydton Elementary School for many years.


Mrs. Smith served her community by working as a voter registration volunteer and participating in Boydton Day annual events. She was elected to the School Board for Mecklenburg County Public Schools where she served for four years. Gloria had a warm infectious smile, a charming personality, and always put others before herself and would always lend a helping hand to anyone who needed assistance. She will be deeply missed.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Smith; two brothers, Oakley Davis, Jr. and Curtis Davis; and three brothers-in-law, Frank Smith (Abradella), Oris "Al" Smith (Betty), and George Randolph Smith "Billy" (Vasche).


She leaves to cherish in her memory her daughter, Angela Smith (Judy Tidrick) of Tulalip, WA; son, Ronnie Smith of Petersburg, VA; two sisters, Eva Graves (Floyd) of Danville, VA and Janice Edwards (Michael) of Clarkdale, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Smith Land (Willie) of Lawrenceville, VA and Janie Davis (Oakley) of Java, VA; two brothers-in-law, Freddie Lee Smith (Patsy) of Dumfries, VA and Lenwood Coleman (Brenda) of Lawrenceville, VA, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.


A memorial service for Mrs. Gloria D. Smith will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Chase City, VA with Rev. Dr. Ricky A. Lee, officiating.


Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
