Mr. George Wallace Stevenson Sr., 76, of Boydton, VA entered eternal rest Friday, January 22, 2010 at CJW Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond, VA. Mr. Stevenson was born in Chadbourn, NC May 11, 1933 to the late James Flowers and Lula Moore. He was adopted by loving parents Lela and George Stevenson. He was a 1963 graduate of Saint Paul’s College, Lawrenceville, VA and also studied music at Hartford Conservatory of Music, James Madison University, Virginia State College, Longwood College and the University of Virginia. George was a well accomplished performer. Singing and writing were his passion. He has recorded several music CDs. He sang the Lord’s Prayer to open the concert for the late Mahalia Jackson at the Bushnell Memorial Auditorium in Hartford, CT and sang at the 1965 World’s Fair in NY. Mr. Stevenson was previously employed as a teacher in the Halifax County School System; was a retiree of Mecklenburg Correctional Center; was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was affiliated with Saint Paul’s Memorial Chapel, Lawrenceville, VA where he was a member of the Saint Paul’s Memorial Chapel Choir. Mr. Stevenson was previously married to the former Joann Macklin of Boydton, VA; this union was blessed with four children. Cherishing his memories are his children George Stevenson III (Clarissa), Jolanda Stevenson, Robert Stevenson all of Boydton, VA and Roslyn S. Salley (Timothy) of South Hill, VA; nine grandchildren, Kwaman, Takera, Davon, Robert, Talmadge and Brittany Stevenson, Courtney and Camryn Salley and Tajmon Dailey; eight sisters, Gladys Thompson of Wilmington, NC, Virginia Lee of Burkeville, VA, Barbara Williams and Betty Redd of Farmville, VA, Lula Little of Baltimore, MD and Margie Flowers of Chadbourn, NC, Mary Flowers and Rose Flowers of Michigan; six brothers, Billy Little of Wilmington, NC, Jackie Moore of Richmond, VA, Cornell Moore of Columbia, SC and Donald Ray Flowers of Chadbourn, NC, Paul Flowers of Jacksonville, FL and Donzie Flowers of Brooklyn, NY; a devoted niece, Angel Brown, a devoted friend, Myrna Thompson and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mr. George Wallace Stevenson Sr. will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA with burial following Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, VA. Viewing for Mr. Stevenson will held Wednesday only from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
