Edward H. "Sonny" Powell

Mr. Edward Harris Powell, affectionately known as “Sonny”, 80, of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Powell was born in Mecklenburg County, VA on May 18, 1937 to the late Thomas Witt and Hattie Harris Powell. He was a graduate of East End High School and at an early age joined Lone Oak Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He later moved his membership to Concord Baptist Church where he served as Assistant Chairman of the Deacon’s Ministry, President of the Gospel Choir, and was a member of the Male Chorus and Usher’s Ministry. Mr. Powell was formerly employed by the Mecklenburg County School Bus Shop for many years, and was a long-time employee of Burlington Industries, Inc. in Clarksville, VA. He was also a member of the R. C. Yancey Masonic Lodge #284. In addition to his parents, Mr. Powell was preceded in death by seven sisters: Mary V. Green, Ethel Powell, Lucy Ann Gregory, Opie S. Gregory, Ida Crute, Rosa Powell Green, and Elizabeth Powell Oliver, and three brothers: Coneary Powell, Garland R. Powell, and Ernest W. Powell. He leaves to cherish his memory, devoted wife: Annella H. Powell of Chase City, VA; son: Vincent Powell (Rena) of Chesapeake, VA; two granddaughters: Taylor and Tyler Powell both of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters: Leoria Boyd and Nellie Carter both of Newark, NJ; brother: Clarence “Billie” Powell (Tina) of Yorktown, PA, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mr. Edward Harris Powell will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Concord Baptist Church, Chase City, VA with Rev. Raleigh M. Bagley III officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
