Dorothy Marlene Gary

Mrs. Dorothy Marlene Gary, 84, of Roselle, NJ and formerly of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018 in Stratford, NJ. Mrs. Gary was born on June 6, 1934, to the late Lucinda Giles Farrar and Ernest Lee Farrar. She was a 1952 graduate of Historic Thyne Institute. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia State College in 1957. Thereafter she received a Master’s in Special Education from Columbia University. In 1977 Dorothy received a Master of Arts in Student Personnel Services from Kean College of New Jersey. While attending Virginia State College, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Upon relocating to New Jersey Dorothy became an active member of the North Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. During her career Dorothy taught Special Education at Roosevelt Junior High School in New Jersey for seven years. She was then after employed as a Guidance Counselor in the Elizabeth Public School System and served at Battin High School and Elizabeth High School until her retirement in 2008. Dorothy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at a young age and maintained a consistent relationship with Him throughout her life. When Dorothy was a resident of Roselle, New Jersey she attended The First Presbyterian Church. When she returned to Chase City, after retirement, she was a life-long member of Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church and attended Bethlehem Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gary was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Gary and her son, Bertram Giles Gary. Cherishing her memories are a brother, Ernest Cartrell Farrar (Marie), of Chase City, Virginia; her adopted and devoted daughter, Hilda Massenburg and family, Gerald, Aminah, Akirah (Mike) of New Jersey, Goddaughter, Rev. Sakena Young-Scaggs of Arizona, devoted friend and confidant Katherine Carruthers of Texas and Mt. Olivet Baptist Church family of Haddonfield, New Jersey and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA with Rev. James Lindsey officiating. Burial will follow in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Public viewing for family and friends will be Tuesday from 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
