Charlie Hoover Overby

Deacon Charlie Hoover Overby, 80, of Nelson, VA and formerly of Durham, NC entered eternal rest Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC. Mr. Overby was born in Mecklenburg County, VA April 16, 1928 to the late Charlie Lester and Hattie Norwood Overby. He received his formal education from West End High School, Skipwith, VA, where he played in the state basketball finals three year in a row. He was a US Army Veteran having served in the Korean War. Mr. Overby was a member of Wharton Memorial Baptist Church, Nelson, VA; where he served as a deacon and sang in the male chorus; while living in Durham, NC Mr. Overby attended Mount Level Missionary Baptist Church where he sang in the male chorus. He retired from Research Triangle Institute after 25 years of service. Mr. Overby was preceded in death by three brothers, and two sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Ruby Baxter Overby of Nelson, VA; five daughters, and two sons-in-law:  Wahid Al-Salam of Washington DC, Joyce Overby McClain (Marvin, Jr.) of Atlanta GA, Jacqueline Lanette Overby of Durham NC, Pamela Faye Overby of Nelson, VA, and Camela “Kim” Warren (Leon) of Greensboro NC; nine grandchildren, Sadiqa Al-Salam, Nadir Al-Salam, Azim Al-Salam, Alamin Al-Salam, Kamila Al-Salam,  Marvin McClain III (CJ), Leon Warren III (Trey),  Zachary McClain, and Zuriel Overby; four great grandchildren, three sisters, Marjorie Davis of Philadelphia, PA,  Geneva Hester of Buffalo Junction, VA, and Gladys Arnold (Leon) of Landover Maryland; sister-in-law, Frances Overby as well as his mother-in-law Sadie Baxter of Durham NC,  , and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and caring friends. Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Hoover Overby will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Friday, May 9, 2008 at Wharton Memorial Baptist Church, Nelson, VA with Rev.  James A. Hudson, Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Wharton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 P.M. at C.H. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
