Bessie Mae Hector of Chase City, VA transitioned from this earthly home on Thursday, August 31st at Sentara Meadowview Terrace in Clarksville, VA at the age of 88.


Bessie was born in Wake County, North Carolina on December 23, 1934 to the late John Martin, Sr. and Marie White Martin Jeffress.


She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Greater Union Baptist Church. Bessie married Porter Hector, Jr. and to this union, two children were born, Claude E. Hector and Jerry E. Hector.


After living in Chase City for a period, they moved to New Jersey and made East Orange, New Jersey their home. Bessie worked in the nursing field for numerous years, before retiring and returning home with her husband to Chase City.


Upon returning home, she re-instated her membership back to Greater Union Baptist Church. She was a dedicated member, serving on the Usher Board , Missionary Board, Sunday School Clerk and Co - Mother of the church. She also enjoyed attending her husband's church, Bluestone Baptist Church.


She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Claude E. Hector (Cynthia Warren, her devoted caregiver) of the home; four grandchildren: Yvette Edwards of District Heights, Maryland, Allen Hector of Richmond, Virginia, Kenneth Hector and Keith Hector; six great grandchildren ; two sisters, Isabella M. Bacon (Charlie, Sr.) of Chase City, Virginia and Annie M. Russell of Plainfield, New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn R. Martin of Chase City, Virginia and Minnie Pearl Hector of Newark, New Jersey; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Porter Hector, Jr., her son, Jerry Hector, one sister, Rebecca M. Bacon, and three brothers, John Martin, Jr., William Martin and James I. Martin.


Funeral services for Bessie Mae Hector will be held on Wednesday, September 6th at 1:00 p.m. with services at Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA with Rev. Linda Goode delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chase City, Virginia. Public viewing for family and friends will be on Tuesday from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM.


Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase CIty, VA.
