Mr. Alonzo Barrett 90, of Red Oak, VA entered eternal rest Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston, VA. Mr. Barrett was born in Greenwood, NC March 18, 1918 to the late Baxter and Carrie Barrett. He attended Mount Zion High School and while in Greenwood he was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Barrett was a veteran of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Later in life Alonza moved to Philadelphia, PA and Peekskill, NY. He joined Mount Olive Baptist Church, where he was a member of the gospel choir. In 1961 he became a member of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge #44 F.A.M. (PH). Alonza was employed by Yorktown Motor Lodge in NY for over 30 years, in 1986 he retired and returned to Red Oak, VA. Mr. Barrett was preceded in death by three children, four sisters and two brothers. Cherishing his memories are his wife, Elizabeth Barrett, seven children, Barbara, Janice, Terry, Andre, Trevor, Sybil and Kellie, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one brother, Ander Barrett of NC; three sisters-in-law, one daughter-in-law and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mr. Alonzo Barrett will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA with Elder Vernell Harper, officiating. Burial will follow in the Harpers Temple Church Cemetery, Clarksville, VA. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1304 North Main St., Chase City, VA.
